Steve Rogers to release country music in Kikuyu

Steve Rogers, real name Steve Wainaina, is a country music singer from Mucatha, Kiambaa subcounty, Kiambu county. 

“I'm a singer and not just as a country music singer,” he told the Star.

“But I think I have blended well with country music looking at the kind of music that I have always wanted to play, your kind of music, music that anyone else would want to listen to, music that you would listen with your kid, music that is more of a family set-up.”

Rogers has been in the music industry for a decade, entertaining country music lovers.

He says music is universal. He fell in love with the country music genre and started doing covers, which were well received.

The singer wants to widen the scope of country music lovers by moving away from doing country music covers and writing his own songs.

“To reach more country music lovers, I have decided to do the music in Kiswahili and Kikuyu as English is not the main language for most Kenyans, and I believe they will appreciate, love and embrace it more, this genre of music,” Rodgers said.

He says he is doing more of his own composition and has also done more music covers just to make a brand, and going forward, he hopes to be performing his own music.

“I have released my own songs, which one can find on @steverogersKenya. One of them that I composed in 2017 is called ‘Let Him Go’,” Rogers said.

He says country music in Kenya is a platform that is still virgin as there are few artistes who can perform, and he hopes there will be more people embracing the music and many who will learn the trade.

“If there could be more artistes performing this type of genre, it could be competitive and people will enjoy it and we would take country music to the next level,” Rogers said.

"I have mentored some musicians and I believe country music will be huge in Kenya and even in Africa."

Rodgers invited Kenyans to join him this year for lots of concerts and be on the lookout for his six original songs that should be released by February. He will also be promoting the famous song ‘My Land is Kenya’, done in Kikuyu.
