Only 173,345 candidates get university entry grades

Only 173, 345 out of the 881, 416 students who sat the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams will get direct qualification for university admission.

Further, the were no irreglarities. 

In the results released by Education CS Ezekiel Machogu on Friday, the students scored the minimum university entry grade of C+ and above.

This implies that some 713,073 students who wrote the exams will be accommodated in technical training institutes and other tertiary institutions.

“Most significantly, all the remaining candidates are elegible to join TVET institutions, Teacher Training Colleges, Medical 24 Training Colleges and other tertiary learning institutions for various courses,” Machogu said.

The results however shows that the number of students who scored the university grades increased compared to the previous year when 145,776 students attained the grade.

Some 1,146 students score grades A plain compared to 1,138 in 2021.

“A total of 875 male students attained a mean grade of A, males have done better and I hope going forward, females will improve,” the CS said.

Some 6,407 candidates got A minus, 15,682 scored grade B plus, some 31,303 scored B plain and 48,719 got B minus.

Some 70,088 scored grade C plus.

However, some 30,822 students scored grade E in the exams. They include 12,760 female and 18,062 male students.

“Encouragingly, the number of candidates obtaining a mean grade of E in 2022 declined significantly to 30,822 (3.49%) despite the increase in candidature, compared with 46,151 (5.56%) in 2021,” the CS said.

“This clearly leads us to conclude that most of the candidates scored grades of higher quality,” he added.

"The number of candidates with mean grade D+ and above in the 2022 KCSE Examination is 522,588 (59.14%) compared with 442,251 (53.29%) in 2021," the CS said.

A total of 190 candidates with special needs scored an overall grade C plus and above in 2022 KCSE exam.

One candidate got an A plain, nine students got A minus, 18 got B plus, 33 got B plain, 48 got B minus and 81 scored C plus.

Some 218 special needs students who sat the exam got grade E, 639 got D minus, 486 scored D plain and 281 students scored D minus.

The results show that 132 students in the special needs category got 132 marks and 180 scored C minus.
