Nominated Senator Peris Tobiko has criticised Governor Kawira Mwangaza terming her a major drawback to the women empowerment movement.

Tobiko, who is a member of the Special Committee investigating Kawira’s impeachment by MCAs, told the committee that during her three months stint in office, the governor has strengthened the view of those opposed to women in leadership.

"I celebrated your victory because you are my sister. We were with you in the National Assembly. What I "I didn't know is that your victory will bring all women down," she said on Wednesday.

The governor had taken the witness stand to defend herself over allegations levelled against her by MCAs.

When allowed to ask the governor questions, the senator addressed the county chief as "my sister".

Some of the evidence the MCAs submitted to the committee were video clips that cast the governor as an aggressive individual who is on a warpath with all local leaders in Meru.

"You know what it has cost the Kenyan women to create space in the political arena," she said, even as she challenged the governor to "tame her tongue" and engage all leaders for the good of the county.

"Tame your tongue because it can burn the county," she said.

Tobiko said the governor had vilified, abused, and trampled on everybody during her short stint as governor, a situation she argued portends danger for the county.

"At this rate, you will finish yourself. You are in a process of self-destruction. I  had hoped that your success will propel me to be Kajiado's governor. But as it is, your victory will bring us down," she said.

"You must know that it is the victor who needs other leaders, not the other way round."Your actions have given voice to the naysayers of the women's empowerment movement."

In her defence, Kawira said she was a victim of a scheme by individuals she did not name who are working to end her political career.

"I have tried to work with all other leaders including MCAs but they have resisted my overtures," she said.

The governor had apologised more than 70 times but none of the MCAs has reciprocated.

"I am ready to apologize even now to anyone who I have offended," she said, adding that she desiresis to work with all leaders from the county.

Describing her problem with MCAs as a little misunderstanding, Kawira revealed the genesis of her problem with MCAs is the ward development fund.

"I implore this house to make the ward fund legal to give me a framework to work with," she said.

Senator Kavindu asked Kawira to humble herself and serve the people of Meru.

"You were hurt by many people during the campaigns. Take it out and serve the people without discrimination," she said.
