EALA MPs elect to be sworn in on Monday in Arusha

The East African Legislative Assembly MPs elect have arrived in Arusha, Tanzania ahead of their swearing in on Monday.

In a statement on Monday, EALA MP elect Suleiman Shahbal said they have finished registration and orientation.

"Safely arrived in Arusha, Tanzania ahead of swearing-in. Catching up with fellow EALA MPs elect Kanini Kega and David Ole Sankok," he said.

"Done with registration and orientation at EA Parliament in Arusha. With Kanini Kega and Kennedy Kalonzo."

The EALA elected members include Hassan Omar, Iman Falhada, Kennedy Musyoka, Kanini Kega, Zipporah Kering, Godfrey Mwangi, Winnie Odinga, David Sankok and Suleiman Shahbal.

Speakers Amason Kingi and Moses Wetang'ula forwarded the names of nine elected EALA MPs to the EALA clerk.

In an affidavit filed by clerk Jeremiah Nyengenye, the Senate asked the court to dismiss the case filed challenging the list of the elected EALA members.

Kau Quentin Mengo moved to court to challenge the list for lack of regional balance.

He said the members were elected on November 17 and thereafter were declared as elected by the National Assembly and Senate

“In a joint letter dated November 21, the Speakers of both houses in their capacity as returning officers of EALA election, jointly transmitted to the clerk of the EALA the names of the nine nominees as duly elected by Parliament as members of EALA,” the affidavit reads.
