Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has asked President William Ruto to lower the cost of affordable houses in Machakos.

Wavinya said only a few people are able to pay for the houses.

She spoke on Wednesday during the groundbreaking of Mavoko affordable housing project.

"Consider the cost of the affordable houses when they are constructed. Even if we get houses that cost Sh500,000 or Sh1 million, someone should be able to pay as low as Sh3,000 monthly to own the house," Wavinya said.

The government seeks to develop 5,360 housing units in the Sh20.1 billion project.

The Mavoko AHP comprises of studio, one, two and three-bedroom units together with social amenities, magnificently designed to meet modern lifestyle demands.

The project will also include development of the supporting external infrastructure and amenities.

Ruto said he is planning to construct 200,000 to 250,000 housing units each year.

This is in a bid to avail more affordable houses in the country and reduce the number of people living in informal settlements.

“Our aim is to construct these houses so that ordinary citizens can be able to get decent living at affordable rates,” Ruto said on Wednesday.

The President said the project will positively impact many in the country.

He said becoming a house owner in the country is costly of which only a few people can manage.
