The Mandera North Parliamentary election petition has begun at Milimani Law Court.

The Monday proceeding started with cross-examination of the Jubilee Party chief agent Omar Jibril Mohamed, who explained that he was not aware he was a state officer, leading to his involvement in politics.

The petition was presented before High Court Judge Lucy Gitari.

During the hearing in which Jubilee's Mohamed Farah Bardad is challenging the election of MP Abdullah Bashir Sheikh of the United Democratic Movement (UDM), Jibril said he did not know that he had been appointed as the chairman of the Kenya Library Board Service.

He told the court that he had learnt of his appointment as the board chair on August 16, days after the election through a WhatsApp group.

The KNLS chair also dismissed claims that failed to explain how a presiding officer marked the ballot papers while some of the party agents were out of the tally centre.

In the petition,  it also emerged that Mohamed voted in a different polling station despite his name being in the register of another polling station.

In the August poll, Sheikh Abdulahi was declared the winner after he garnered 9, 214 votes, while Mohamed bagged 6,999 votes.
