Police said the two had robbed pedestrians in the town and were escaping when they were confronted on Monday morning.

Part of the property they had reportedly stolen from the victims was recovered, police said.

The area has been experiencing a wave of crime amid ramped-up efforts to contain the trend.

In the city centre, along Moi Avenue, two suspected thieves were stoned to death before being set a blaze in a botched robbery.

The two were part of a gang that had been attacking and robbing pedestrians on Saturday night when they were confronted by a mob.

Police want those arrested to be surrendered to authorities for processing and prosecution.

According to police and witnesses, a pedestrian was confronted and mugged near Nairobi Sports House and robbed of his mobile phones and Sh5,000.

The victim was an electrician and was headed to his Juja Road home when he was attacked by four men. He raised alarm and alerted other pedestrians who responded and stoned two of the suspects to death and later set them on fire.

Police arrived at the scene and moved the bodies to the mortuary.

In Makongeni, a suspect who tried to steal clothes from a hanging line was saved by police after a mob tried to lynch him.

Police said the suspect had collected almost a dozen of clothes from the hanging line and was leaving when he was confronted by a mob and stoned.

Police on patrol saved the suspect and took him to the hospital for attention in fair condition.

Cases of mob lynching have been on the rise amid calls on the public to desist from such trend. At least three incidents are reported daily in the country.

Experts say the public resort to such tactics out of frustrations over the failure to tame a trend of incidents.

Meanwhile, a 24-year-old man was stabbed to death in a robbery mission in Huruma area, Nairobi.

The deceased body was found on the roadside with a stab wound in the chest long after the incident had happened.

Police say they are yet to make an arrest in connection with the incident and efforts to get the suspects behind the same are ongoing.
