A 12-year-old boy who hiked a ride on a lorry was crushed to death after he lost his grip and fell along Komarock Road, Nairobi.

Police said the driver of the lorry was informed he had killed the boy by crushing his head as he raced from Dandora area towards Kariobangi area carrying sand.

The boy had jumped and hung on the rear side of the lorry to get a lift to Kariobangi.

Locals said the trend is common in the area as youths hang on the lorries and drop kilometres away on reaching their destinations.

On Wednesday evening, the boy is said to have lost his grip at a bumpy area and dropped on the road.

Witnesses said on dropping on the road, he rolled ahead and under the lorry, which ran over him.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said the body was removed to City Mortuary awaiting identification and postmortem.

“We urge caution among all road users. We understand the trend is common in the area and it is unfortunate it happened,” he said.

Elsewhere in Lungalunga area, a 32-year-old man was electrocuted in an incident.

Police say Nelson Aluda was electrocuted by a naked live wire on the rooftop of a house in the area.

Police who arrived at the scene said the illegally connected naked electric wire had power at the time of the incident.

He was tying a rope on the wire to be used as clothe hanging line. Such incidents are common in informal settlements.

Police and Kenya power officials say they receive at least five incidents a month out of electrocution.
