Kenya National Trading Corporation has said there was no certification done to allow importation of maize into the country.

KNTC managing director Pamela Mutua further distanced the corporation from involvement in the planned importation of 10 million bags of maize.

"To the best of my understanding, there was no certification done to allow importation of maize in the country and KNTC has never been directed to procure the same," she said.

Mutua spoke when she met National Assembly departmental committee for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives chaired by Embakasi North MP Gakuya James Mwangi on Tuesday afternoon.

The meeting followed a statement by the Trade Cabinet secretary Moses Kuria on the importation of maize in the country.

The committee sought to be apprised by the KNTC boss with information on the organisation's state of preparedness to import the consignment, while adhering to procurement guidelines.

On the issue of the safety of GMO maize to Kenyans, Mutua promised to engage on the same and inform Kenyans on its effects.

KNTC is wholly owned by the government through the Ministry of East African Affairs, Commerce and Tourism.

The corporation has specific objectives, which include promoting and growing wholesale and retail trade.

The state has since clarified that it will import 10 million bags of maize between February and April next year.

In a statement, Agriculture Cabinet secretary Mithika Linturi said importation will not take place this year.

This is as Kenyans and some politicians raised queries over the quick decision to import the produce yet some farmers have not exhausted the grains in their stores.
