Kenya commits to enhancing parliamentary engagements with UK

He acknowledged that the two countries have a established strong bonds.

The Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula has committed to ensuring that the UK and Kenya parliaments are engaged in exchange programs.

He had on Wednesday met with the UK Ambassador Jane Marriot and the Permanent Representative to UNEP and UN-Habitat in Nairobi Josephine Gauld, at his office.

Marriott called upon Wetangula to help strengthen the Kenya- UK Parliamentary Friendship Group in order to advance engagements between the two countries.

She said some legislative instruments needed to be fast-tracked including the National Disaster Risk Management Bill and the election campaign finance.

The Ambassador said the latter will enhance transparency in the funding of election processes in the country.

On his part, Wetangula noted that the UK Parliament has extensively worked with its Kenyan counterpart in matters of trade and national development.

"The UK- Kenya Parliamentary Association is active and legislatures of the two nations have historically built strong bonds to capacity build and share knowledge and ideas," he said.

He lauded the UK government for continued bilateral engagements with Kenya in various sectors including the medical and security sector,  technological innovations and education.
