In a statement on Friday, the organisation said the move was a right step towards the right direction for a just system.

"We commend the political goodwill that has enabled this case to see the light of the day since, in the past, many of our attempts as a human rights movement demanding the prosecution of killer cops have been met with rejection from the state," the statement read.

According to the statement, Rashid's case is one of the many cases reported against rogue police officers but justice has not been found.

"In the past, many who’ve tried to be a mouthpiece of victims of police misconduct have ended up being victimised, criminalised and even brutally murdered like in the case of Lawyer Willy Kimani," the statement read.

Guided by Section 29 (a) of the IPOA Act, the findings were forwarded to the DPP with the recommendation to charge Rashid, with murder.

IPOA said Thursday, the ODPP, after independently interrogating the case file upheld the findings that there is sufficient evidence to charge the officer with the offence of murder contrary to section 203 as read with section 204 of the Penal Code.

On Thursday, IPOA moved to the High Court at Milimani, Nairobi and obtained a summons against the police officer, to attend court and take a plea on December 8.
