Donate Bonga points towards drought relief, Safaricom to customers

Mobile provider Safaricom has asked its customers to donate Sh4 billion worth of Bonga points towards the drought mitigation initiative.

Company’s Chief Executive officer Peter Ndegwa said the money being held in various accounts had continued to remain unredeemed for long.

“We appeal to Kenyans, every single Kenyan to come together in cash and in kind to donate their Bonga points to ensure we do not have kids going hungry,” he said.

Ndegwa who is the head of the national steering committee on drought response spoke Friday during the inauguration of the team.

His statement comes amidst reports that subscribers were likely to lose Bonga points effective January 2023, if the points are more than three-years-old.

“Effective January 1, 2023, all non-redeemable Bonga points older than three years (2019) will expire and will be unavailable for redemption,” it said in its news terms.

As part of the new changes set to be introduced, the Telco has also said all unredeemed reward points will be expiring after three years.

Bonga points is a loyalty scheme for all the subscribers where they earn a point for every Sh10 spent on voice calls, SMS, data and MPesa services.
