Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has ordered a crackdown against unlicensed taxis and tuktuk in the city centre.

The crackdown will cover Upper hill, Central Business District and other city zones where they are not licensed to operate.

Also, vehicles on the spot include Sientas, Noah and Voxy.

“I don’t want to see small vehicles operating as PSVs in the CBD they should be removed immediately. If we allow this to continue, it will lead to anarchy,” Sakaja said.

He spoke on Friday at Charter Hall where he met the Matatu Owners and Stakeholders.

Sakaja emphasised the need to operate within the law, saying no one will be allowed to operate with impunity.

Taxis and tuktuks have over the years increased in the CBD with some accused of being involved in crime.

The move has caused push and pull between them and the matatu people as they scramble for space.

Last year, Nairobi County Assembly passed a motion seeking to remove all on-street picking and dropping zones by the PSVs and boda bodas within the CBD.

This was after concerns were raised on how the PSVs have illegally turned most streets, pedestrian walkways and on-street parking within the city centre into bus stops and parking lots.

Wading into the issue, in  November last year Nairobi Metropolitan Service suspended the new allocation of picking/dropping bays for matatus in Nairobi after concerns were raised over illegal allocations of the bays by unauthorised officers.
