A Nakuru police boss has weighed in on remarks by a senior cop that appeared to encourage the public to lynch murder suspects.

Police Commander Peter Mwanzo said Bondeni OCS Gemenet Kimutai did not encourage young people to take the law into their hands during a recent security meeting.

Speaking to the media, Mwanzo said the OCS meant that the public should collaborate with the police in curbing insecurity.

"Let's work together with the public for the purpose of getting a safer city," he said.

"It's very disappointing to witness a crime but you can do nothing about it. You helplessly stand there and watch these boys mugging, stabbing and killing innocent people. So what the OCS was calling for is for the public to work with police," he said.

He added the OCS was talking about criminals and not innocent persons.

Kimutai was captured in a viral video advising citizens to lynch murder suspects.

He was heard telling a public forum in the undated video that the law allows the public to lynch notorious suspects.

"Kama mtu si peaceful, you assault that person as you wait for the police," he said to a loud applause from the audience.

He went on to explain that such actions are permitted by law.

"Article 24 of this Constitution says certain rights can be limited and right to life is one right which can be limited," he said.
