Inspector General of police nominee Japhet Koome will today know his fate as MPs debate on a report from the joint vetting committee.

The report, tabled on Wednesday by the departmental committee on administration and internal affairs chairman Nelson Koech has been slated for the afternoon, as a special motion.

“Pursuant to the provisions of section 12(1) of the National Police Service Act, 2011 and section 8 of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act, 2011, this House approves the appointment of Japhet Koome Nchebere as the inspector general of the National Police Service,” the motion read.

On Wednesday, Senators approved the report from the committee, which found Koome suitable and qualified for appointment as the next IG.

The report states that Koome has the necessary experience and qualifications to hold the office as per the requirements of the National Police Service Act.

It notes that Koome exhibited knowledge in matters relating to security, law, management, leadership skills and qualities necessary to administer, manage and command the Service

If approved, Koome will be sworn in by Chief Justice Martha Koome to take over as next IG.
