Wetangula gazettes Kandara, Garissa Town MP seats as vacant

He has at the same time notified the IEBC of the vacancy.

Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula has gazetted Kandara and Garissa Township MP seats as vacant.

The gazettement came after former Kandara MP Alice Wahome resigned to take up a cabinet secretary role in the Ministry of Water and sanitation.

Wahome tabled her resignation on Wednesday, October 26.

"Pursuant to Articles 101(4)(a) and 103(1)(d) of the Constitution as read with section 16(3) of the Elections Act No. 24 of 2011, it is notified for the general information of the public that the seat of the Member of the National Assembly for Kandara Constituency elected under Article 97(1)(a) of the Constitution has become vacant with effect from 26th October 2022,"  the gazette notice by the speaker dated October 27 reads.

 

Equally, Former Garissa Township MP Aden Duale exited the office after landing an appointment as Defence Cabinet secretary in President William Ruto's administration.

He was to serve his fourth term as MP when the new role came calling.

"Pursuant to Articles 101(4)(a) and 103(1)(d) of the Constitution as read with section 16(3) of the Elections Act No. 24 of 2011, it is notified for the general information of the public that the seat of the Member of the National Assembly for Garissa Township Constituency elected under Article 97(1)(a) of the Constitution has become vacant with effect from 26th October 2022," Wetangula said in a gazette notice dated October 27.

The two took an oath of office as Cabinet secretaries on Thursday. They, on Friday, officially took over their respective offices in handing over ceremonies held at their respective ministries.

The speaker has at the same time notified the IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati of the vacancy in the two constituencies.

The IEBC boss will now set a date for by-elections through another gazette notice.
