Tata Chemicals Magadi has waived medical bills for the 32 students injured after a violent wind blew off classroom roofs on Monday.
The 32 students at Oldonyonyokie Girls Secondary School in Magadi were admitted to Magadi Soda hospital on Monday evening.
Later 25 of them were treated and discharged after doctors were satisfied with their condition.
Tata Chemical Magadi managing director and chief executive Subodh Srivastav approved and authorised a waiver at 100 per cent for all the students treated at their hospital.
"Our hospital serves the staff of Tata Chemicals Magadi company and the community. After assessing the situation in the country, I felt that their parents needed our support," Srivastav said.
Dr Raymond Bahati said out of the seven critically injured students admitted at the facility, two have been transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital and the county subcounty hospital in Ongata Rongai.
"The one we took to KNH had sustained a spinal injury while the second one sustained a fracture on the right lower limb. Their conditions are, however, stable. We transferred them because we cannot handle their cases," Bahati said.
TSC county director Solomon Leseewa, on Thursday appealed to well-wishers to assist in re-roofing the three classrooms.
Leseewa said most of the injured students are those in Forms 3 and 4, who suffered head cuts from flying iron sheets that were torn off from the classroom roofs.
He said the winds blew off part of the Form 2 class, the administration block and Form 3 and 4 blocks at the girls' secondary school.
"There were 115 students in the school when the incident happened. Some had gone home over school fees arrears, while others have not reported back due to the ongoing drought," Leseewa said.
He said the students are traumatised and require psychological therapy urgently.
The school roofs were also blown off by strong winds in 2019 and 2020.
