The National Council for Persons with Disabilities has launched a five-day mass registration of eligible persons in Homa Bay county.

Council’s county director Ruth Oyier said on Monday the drive, which will be coordinated by grassroots representatives, would be conducted in five locations.

She urged parents and guardians who have children living with disabilities to present them for registration so they can benefit from various interventions.

Oyier, who spoke during the launch of the exercise at Imbo chiefs’ camp, said some of the benefits include the provision of wheelchairs and crutches.

She said registered persons who have businesses would have an upper hand in getting tenders, tax exemption and duty-free importation of vehicles.

Oyier urged the county government and other partners to work with them to reach the ultimate goal of registering all eligible persons.

She said some of the challenges they face include inadequate medical personnel to carry out assessments on those seeking registration.

Oyier said there was only one ear specialist doctor and no audiometer at the Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital.

South Kodhidha assistant chief Margret Otonde urged eligible residents to register for their own good.
