Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has opined that President William Ruto made a mistake by appointing former President Uhuru Kenyatta as Kenya's regional peace envoy.
Ahmednasir said that Uhuru does not have any political influence in Kenya and in the African region to deserve the role.
"It was huge mistake for President William Ruto to appoint President Uhuru Kenyatta as Kenya's regional peace envoy. Uhuru has zero political capital in the region and Kenya during his tenure was seen as meddler in the internal affairs of others always on behalf of third parties," Ahmednasir tweeted.
President Ruto asked Uhuru to be steering peace initiatives in the African region moments after he was sworn in.
He said the former President had done well in ensuring there was peace within the region.
"On peace initiative in our region, in Ethiopia and the Great Lakes region, I have asked my elder brother President Uhuru Kenyatta who has done commended able engagement with those regions and he has graciously agreed to continue chairing those discussion on behalf of the Government of Kenya," Ruto said.
However, on his first assignment, Uhuru said that he will not attend AU peace talks on Ethiopia which were to be held in South Africa.
In a letter to the chairman of the African Union Mousa Faki Mahamat, the former president cited a clash in his schedule as the reason for not being in a position to attend.
“I wish to notify your good office that I will not be able to attend the AU-Convened Peace Talks scheduled for October 8, 2022, in South Africa owing to conflicts in my schedule,” he said in the letter dated October 6.
The former president, however, expressed commitment to being a party to such a meeting in future if informed prior.
The peace talks aimed at ending the two-year conflict between Ethiopia's government and the rival Tigray forces.
