Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said white people deceived Africans by advising them against having many children.
While regretting having only two children, Gachagua termed as "foolish" the decision by Africans to follow the advice.
"I think some of us were not very wise...When wazungus came they told us to have two children and we accepted," he said.
Gachagua said sometimes when he is at home with his wife, Pastor Dorcas, he wonders how a house without children is really a home.
"Looking back in my case, I think it was foolish," he said.
The DP spoke in Mathira constituency during the burial of his late brother, John Reriani.
"These are things that we did in the 70s, family planning and the like and we followed them without thinking. Now we find ourselves in a situation that is not very nice," Gachagua said.
He encouraged parents to educate their children, giving an example of how his parents educated the first two children and had them help finance their siblings' studies.
Gachagua said that his parents were peasants but knew the meaning of a huge family and had planned their education insurance.
"Education is important. Parents, let us educate our children. In our family, we were nine siblings. Seven of us were educated to university level. Just imagine that the success rate was asked.
He described it as a "good concept", urging them to get many children, educate the elder ones, who will, in turn, educate the younger siblings.
