A police constable was on Friday morning shot dead by a suspected gangster at Nyakach, Kisumu county.
The DCI officer was part of a team from Kisumu that had been deployed to track down the suspect following a tipoff.
According to a police report seen by the Star, the suspect was at a rental property located at Pap Onditi.
The report on the incident indicates that three DCI officers and other officers from Nyakach had laid an ambush to arrest the suspect, believed to have committed a series of robberies in Kisumu, Homabay and Migori counties.
However, the suspect is said to have started shooting indiscriminately at officers.
Two officers were injured during the incident. One suffered a gunshot wound on the left hand while the other one was shot in the thigh and chest.
"The officers engaged with the suspect in a shootout but he managed to escape with gunshot wounds," the report read.
The officers are admitted to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) in Kisumu. They are in stable condition, according to the police incident report.
