Gunmen attack Dutch tourists, robs them of cash in city

Police are hunting down a gang that attacked four tourists and their driver outside their apartment in Nairobi’s Kilimani area.

The gang is said to have robbed them of their cash and valuables.

The four from the Netherlands had boarded their van outside an apartment off Kindaruma Road on Thursday morning ready for a trip to the Nairobi National Park when two gunmen pulled there.

The gunmen were on a motorcycle and at gunpoint demanded cash, chains and mobile phones. They grabbed a bag that contained Sh16,000 and two passports before they rode off.

Witnesses said they shot in the air to scare a mob that had been attracted to the scene by the commotion before riding off toward Ngong Road.

Police were called to the scene and recovered a spent cartridge of 9mm.

The group was left shaken by the broad day attack but none was harmed, witnesses said.

Kilimani police boss Muturi Mbogo said they are hunting down the gang and that they had changed some of the details of the motorcycle they were using.

This comes in the wake of increased deployment of undercover detectives in the city, as police take steps to destabilize criminal gangs that regroup after general elections.

Police say they launching a crackdown on motorcycles in the city suspected to be involved in crime.

Elsewhere, police are looking for a gang that raided two homes in Spring Valley area, Nairobi and robbed occupants of Sh500,000 and jewelry of unknown value.

The gang first held hostage two guards who were on duty and resumed duties of ushering in the occupants of the house.

And when the owner arrived, they ushered him in and later led him to his house where he was at gunpoint ordered to surrender the cash and jewellery that was therein.

Police say the gang escaped on foot into a nearby bush and that they are interrogating the guards who were on duty over the incident.

And a gang raided a construction site in Industrial Area, Nairobi and robbed guards on the duty of materials worth millions of shillings.

The gang had arrived with two lorries that they used to load the materials that included bags of cement, metal, tiles and iron sheets.

They first tied two guards who were on duty in separate rooms before embarking on their mission that took hours. Police were called to the scene minutes after the gang had left.

A hunt on the gang is ongoing.
