Narok senator Ledama Olekina has advised the government to devise new ways of fighting banditry attacks in the northern part of Kenya.

Ledama, who spoke during an interview with Hot 96 FM, said through a well-formulated dialogue with the region’s administration and leaders, a solution to the menace will be achieved.

“This problem would only be amicably solved if the government and the local leadership and administration dialogued to find the source of the vice, “he said.

The lawmaker challenged the President to evaluate and deploy a local investigation to establish those behind the attacks

“The President needs to evaluate and investigate through the help of local administration the sources of the weapons used by the bandits,” he said.

The Azimio la Umoja one Kenya coalition allied member said a forceful fight against the bandits would yield no fruit since security officers would be fighting an unknown war.

“You cannot use force to fight the bandits, this war needs people who understand the pastoralists' culture so well and know the terrain to succeed in the fight,” he added.

He further added that a modern system of marking would help slaughterhouses know the geographical origin of the heads of cows sold to them.

“We need to have a modern system of regional marking of heads of cattle this would help abattoirs understand the origin of heads brought to their disposal.” He said.

He said from this, the abattoirs would at all times remain accountable for the heads they receive from the locals for slaughter.

“With the marking system the abatures will be able to say, we received cattle from region x and slaughtered an x number of cattle from region X,” he said.

The ODM senator added that arresting and probing those found capable through traditional ways of punishment and the modern ways would help end the menace.

He claimed that some leaders who had failed in their political ambitions resorted to funding banditry attacks to gain power.

“Everyone who wants to become a leader must look for power, we need to have a sober leadership of the people on the ground,” he said.
