Eight people suspected to be involved in motorcycle theft in Trans Nzoia county were on Monday arrested by police following a tip-off.

A 35-year-old woman who is the wife to the main suspect was among the eight who police believe are part of the gang that was arrested on Friday and Saturday.

"Their arrest led our officers to the impounding of the motorbike units which they had modified using parts taken from stolen motorcycles," Endebess subcounty Police Commander, Salesio Murrithi told the Star Monday evening.

He said the main suspect who is still at large is a scrap metal dealer in Kiminini market.

"The wife of the main suspect and an assistant by the name Richard Wafula aged 25 years were arrested on Saturday at the said garage in connection with theft of motorcycles and parts," Murrithi said.

Eight motorcycles, two motor cycle engines and 20 fuel tanks were also recovered from the suspects.

In the massive operation on Friday in Endebess subcounty, police managed to arrest six suspects at Khwalenge village and recovered six motorbikes, 49 number plates and 30 fuel tanks.

Murrithi said the motorcycle theft syndicate appears to be gaining momentum in the region.

He said the syndicate mainly targets the popular TVS and Boxer models which have a high demand in the black market.

The police boss said police have received enough information that will lead to the arrest of the main suspect who appears to be elusive and well connected.

"His network of criminals extends to a neighboring county where he is in constant communication with other robbers," he said.

The stolen bicycles and other items were displayed before the media at Endebess police station on Monday afternoon.

Murrithi asked members of the public to give the police information that may lead to the arrest of members of the criminal gang.
