Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula has formally resigned as Bungoma Senator to vie for the National Assembly Speaker.

The law requires one to resign from any public office they are holding before vying for Speaker's post.

In an interview with the media on Wednesday after submitting his papers at the parliament, Wetangula said he quit office a day after the gazettement of his election as Bungoma Senator-elect.

"I did resign a day after the gazettement of my election," he said.

When asked to whom his resignation was addressed to, the Former senator said:

"If you read the Constitution, any Member of Parliament who wishes to resign resigns to the speaker. And I resigned to the speaker," he said while speaking on Wednesday.

Wetangula said the Parliament is critical in the management of the country's public affairs.

He reiterated that the Kenya Kwanza administration will not be involved in the capture of state institutions.

"So, Parliament will be acting in accordance with the powers bestowed upon it under the law and Constitution in carrying out its three principal mandates," he said.

"In doing so, there must be linkages and relationships between the three arms of government, the Parliament itself, Judiciary and Executive, so that we have a tranquil process of running affairs in our country," he added.

He promised that if he is elected as the Speaker, the 13th parliament will work without any fear or favour.

"It will be a vibrant house where legislation will give meaning to the agenda of the government," he said.

Wetangula at the same time disclosed that Uasin Gishu Woman Rep-elect Gladys Shollei has been endorsed as the Kenya Kwanza Alliance Deputy Speaker candidate.

"This distinguished lady, Gladys Boss Shollei, a lawyer distinguished in her own right, is going to be my able deputy speaker God willing," he said.

Wetangula expressed confidence in their voting, saying their members will vote for them.

"Tumejipanga. Our numbers are right."

Wetangula is vying against former speaker Kenneth Marende and 20 others while Shollei is running against Dadaab MP-elect Farah Maalim and three others.
