How Jubilee MCAs switched allegiance to give Ruto party lifeline in Nairobi

UDA is now the leading single party in the Nairobi county assembly with 36 elected ward reps

President-Elect William Ruto's forays in Nairobi politics have been given a solid foundation, thanks to the switch of allegiance by Jubilee MCAs who defected to UDA to defend their seats.

Jubilee, led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, was in 2017 the majority at the county assembly with 66 MCAs, 45 of them elected members.

About 18 MCAs defected to the United Democratic Alliance party ahead of the primaries.

During the August 9 elections, Jubilee won only six out of the 85 ward seats in the city.

The survivors include Robert Mbatia (Kariobangi South), Paul Kados (Mihango), Kamau Thuo (Karura), Antony Kimemia (Harambee), Cyrus Mugo (Ng’ando) and Silas Matara (Dandora Area 2).

Three Jubilee MCAs went for higher positions.

Former Majority leader Abdi Hassan Guyo abandoned his Matopeni ward seat to become Isiolo governor.

The seat was clinched by UDA’s James Koria.

Former Maringo MCA Mark Ndung’u went for the Makadara MP seat but lost to incumbent George Aladwa of ODM.

Maringo ward was won by UDA’s Patrick Mwangi.

Samuel Mwangi of Kayole North went for the Embakasi Central MP seat but lost to incumbent Benjamin Gathiru (UDA).

Kayole North was won by Paul Wachira of UDA.

UDA is now the leading single party in the Nairobi county assembly with 36 elected MCAs.

Former Jubilee MCAs who lost to UDA include Patricia Mutheu (Mlango Kubwa) to Susan Makungu, Anthony Gatune (Kahawa West) to Clement Kamaru, Elijah Mputhia (Njiru) to Heho Gichunji and Ruai’s John Kamangu to James Karanja.

Others are James Kiriba (Riruta) lost to Eric Kiogora, James Mwangi (Kiamaiko) to Joseph Karanja, John Kamau (Komarock) to Chris Wanjohi, Pius Mbono (Zimmerman) to Stephen Mugo, and Geoffrey Nganga (Mwiki) to Samwel Kago.

Former Deputy Majority leader Peter Wanyoike lost the Dandora Area I seat to Allan Maina, Millicent Mugadi lost to Gerald Irungu in Ziwani Kariokor, Benson Mwangi in Mowlem lost to Martin Waithaka while Joseph Komu in Kahawa lost to Eutychus Mukiri.

Samuel Kabiru in Uthiru lost to Peter Maina, Abraham Njihia, who lost the Woodley Kenyatta Golf Course seat to Davidson Ngibuini alias DNG, and Naftaly Mathenge in Githurai to Waithira Mwangi.

Independent candidates also kicked out Jubilee MCAs from office; Julius Njoka lost the Kariobangi North seat to Joel Munuve and Peter Warutere lost the Roysambu seat to Sospeter Gathahu.

ODM has 35 elected MCAs, Wiper party has four, Chama Cha Kazi has one while three seats have been won by independent candidates.

However, Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya has the majority with 45 elected MCAs against Kenya Kwanza at 36.

Looking into parliamentary seats, Azimio has painted the city blue after winning 13 seats out of 17.

Azimio coalition MPs elected in Nairobi on ODM include Babu Owino (Embakasi East), Phelix Odiwuor alias Jalang'o (Lang'ata), Tim Wanyonyi (Westlands), Beatrice Elachi (Dagoretti North), George Aladwa (Makadara), Tom Kajwang' (Ruaraka), Peter Orero (Kibra) and Antony Oluoch (Mathare).

Jubilee has Mark Mwenje (Embakasi West), Amos Mwago (Starehe) and Yusuf Hassan (Kamukunji).

Wiper party retained the Embakasi South seat under incumbent Julius Mawathe.

Ruto-led Kenya Kwanza affiliated legislators elected in Nairobi all came from UDA.

They include Benjamin Gathiru (Embakasi Central), Mwafrika Augustine Kamande (Roysambu), James Gakuya (Embakasi North) and John Karie (Dagoretti South).

The Kasarani MP seat was bagged by Ronald Karauri who vied as an independent.

Apart from the MPs and MCAs, senator-elect Edwin Sifuna and Woman Representative-elect Esther Passaris are all under Azimio.
