Activist Boniface Mwangi has explained the circumstances that led to his behaviour in a viral video that has generated lots of buzz on social media.

The activist was captured in a video recording shouting at hospital staff in a dramatic manner.

The video shows Mwangi even destroying the hospital equipment.

In a detailed statement about the saga, Mwangi explained that he, together with his wife were involved in a road accident on August 21, at Lang'ata road while in a friend's car.

He says the wife was rushed to the city hospital by a well-wisher.

On arrival at the hospital, Mwangi says, the wife was in pain, in a state of delirium, and was in and out of consciousness.

However, the activist says the hospital did not prioritise giving the wife urgent medical care and instead demanded money before they serve her.

"The hospital wanted me to pay in order for my wife to get treatment but I had neither the money nor my wallet," he said.

According to Boniface, Emergency health care is a right in the Constitution (Article 43(2).

He said he acted so in desperation to get the hospital management to attend to his wife beyond taking her vitals and giving her painkillers.

"My wife only got the medical attention she needed when my friend came to the hospital and paid the bill. My family and I are grateful that my wife did not suffer serious injuries," he said.

Mwangi divulged that the incident led to his arrest after the management called the police. He was jailed at Akila police station.

He said he later apologised for his action to the hospital and staff.

"The actions that I took to get my wife medical attention were wrong and I apologized. I paid for all the damages that I had caused. The hospital cost the damaged items at Sh106,000.00, which l paid."

"I reached out to the people who were working at the reception at the time of the incident and apologised to them. Having fully recovered, my wife is back to work."
