A man who allegedly caused grievous harm to his wife and allegedly attempted to kill her has been charged in court.

Gregory Otieno was charged with attempting to kill Mercy Owuor in Soweto village in Kibera Sub County within Nairobi County on August 16.

He was charged with a second count of causing grievous harm to the woman contrary to the penal code.

According to the prosecution, the complainant was attacked moments after talking on her phone.

The accused person suspected that she was talking to another man behind his back.

The accused person allegedly slapped the complainant, knocking her down next to a stove with boiling water and she sustained burnt injuries on her limbs, the court heard.

The prosecution alleges that the accused person later took the stove and hit the woman injuring her head and neck.

He reportedly took a cooking gas cylinder grill and assaulted her with it, inflicting more injuries on her hands as she tried to shield her head.

The woman called for help and the neighbours found her lying in the pool of blood before rushing her to the hospital and later to the police respectively.

In court, the accused person pleaded with principal magistrate Derrick Kuto to grant him lenient bind terms.

Court prosecutor Allan Mogere urged the court not to grant the accused person a cash bail and called for tough bond terms.

The accused was granted a bond of Sh500,000 with an additional surety of a similar amount, without the alternative of cash bail.

The case will be mentioned on September 6, 2022, for further directions.
