Blow by blow account of events on Sakaja's big day

Between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm on Thursday, Johnson Sakaja will be sworn in as Nairobi’s fourth Governor. 

The event, which is set to begin at 9:00 am, will have guests seated as they get entertained by the Nairobi city county choir at KICC.

Opening prayers will then follow as the Master of ceremony leads the programe.

Justice Roselyne Aburili and assisted by magistrate Caroline Kabucho will administer the oath of office to Sakaja and his deputy, Njoroge Muchiri.

In addition to this, the judge will also administer the signing of the integrity document to the duo.

Sakaja at this point can choose to give his speech or not, including the guests.

After the oath, Governor Sakaja will have his first ride in the official Governor’s car, which is a Rolls Royce.

The navy blue Rolls Royce Austin is suited with curtains to cover the occupants and an extra seat that can be converted into a table.

It is an official car of Nairobi County, with the number plate NCC 1. 

 The vehicle was bought in 1966 at Sh217,000 and is mainly used during special functions, like public holidays.

Nairobi's first Governor Evans Kidero and the third, Ann Kananu also rode on the vintage car during their swearing-in ceremony.

At the current market rates, a Rolls Royce Austin Princess retails for approximately Sh2.2 million as of November 2021.

Sakaja will then be expected to inspect a guard of honour along City Hall Way before proceeding to City Hall.

He will then have his first official tour of City Hall before going to the Governor’s office.

At this juncture, the outgoing governor Kananu will hand over the instruments of power.

They include the Nairobi county flag, county coat of arms, the constitution and county public seal.
