Kimilili MP-elect Didmus Barasa is scheduled to take plea in a murder case.

Barasa who has been in police custody for 14 days was accused of shooting dead Brian Olunga, an aide to Kimilili politician Brian Khaemba on August 9.

He was detained at Kisumu cells where he appeared in court virtually and the court allowed police to detain him for two weeks ahead of plea taking on August 24.

This was to allow police conduct postmortem on the body and collect other needed evidence for the case. He was also taken for medical tests.

Officials said he would take plea at a Kakamega court.

“We could not charge him in Bungoma for obvious security reasons,”said an official aware of the issue.

An autopsy on the body of Olunga showed he died of a pistol bullet which struck the right side of his head.

The autopsy showed Olunga died of profuse bleeding when the bullet got stuck in his head.

The bullet was recovered. The exercise was conducted by western region pathologist Dr Dickson Muchana.

Police were given time to to complete investigations and allow more witnesses, including NYS and IEBC officials to record statements.

Police have so far recovered the pistol the MP-elect used in the attack. Barasa has denied shooting the victim who was buried last Saturday.

Police said preliminary findings had shown the incident happened when an altercation broke out between the two prompting Khaemba to leave and headed to his car.

“Barasa followed him in the company of four men and ordered them not to allow him (Khaemba) to leave the place but Khaemba's driver Joshua Nasokho defied the order and ignited the vehicle,” said police.

It was then that Barasa drew a pistol and aimed at Khaemba's aide Olunga and shot him in the forehead killing him on the spot.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at Kimilili sub-county hospital.

It has emerged the two had had an altercation a day before the shooting incident happened.

A backup team was sent to the area to look for the MP before he surrendered.

The MP is a licensed gun holder.

Police had earlier withdrawn the weapon but the MP went to court and obtained an order reinstating the weapon he is believed to have used in the incident.

Police have since searched his property for more evidence after they obtained a warrant.
