Nairobi Governor-elect Johnson Sakaja has revealed he spent Sh15 million on his agents during the August 9 general elections.

The Kenya Kwanza candidate said he had 3,643 agents across the various polling stations in Nairobi, as well as 396 polling centre managers and mobilisers.

"We need to have an electronic transmission for our polls. I have just finished sorting out my agents. It cost me Sh15 million. I had 3,643 agents for three days of work. The rest ilikua kujitolea," Sakaja noted.

He spoke on Tuesday night at a local Television show, where he said that Kenya’s electoral process came with a heavy price to politicians of financial burden.

Sakaja, however, revealed that until the results were announced, he could not afford to pay the agents more money, noting that his supporters worked for free in days where vote tallying and verification exercise took place.

The outgoing Nairobi senator won the Nairobi Governor seat after garnering 699,392 votes, defeating his main rival Polycarp Igathe of the Jubilee party who got 573,518 votes.

Sakaja vied on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket.

He was declared winner by Nairobi County Returning Officer, Albert Gogo, who later issued the certificate.

The governor’s race had attracted nine candidates but was narrowed down to a two-horse race between Sakaja and Igathe.

Sakaja will now succeed Ann Kananu to become Nairobi's fourth governor.
