IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati has said he is proud of his performance as the electoral body's boss.

In his opening remarks before declaring the winner of the presidential election, Chebukati said he had laid a good foundation for his successor.

"I feel proud that I have been given this opportunity to serve Kenyans.  Despite intimidation, harassment and I have done my duty in accordance with the Constitution and the laws of the land.

"I feel proud that I have been given opportunity to serve Kenyans and this of course will be my last election to preside over," Chebukati said in his opening remarks.

"And for those who will come we have prepared for you what the Constitution envisaged for us," Chebukati said.

The IEBC boss spoke even after four of IEBC commissioners disputed the presidential results where UDA' William Ruto was declared winner with 7,176,141 votes against his main rival Raila Odinga who received 6,942,930 votes.

The commissioners led by IEBC vice chairperson Juliana Cherera said they could not own the results because of the opaque nature the last bit of verification was handled.

"We have done the 2022 general election in the most efficient manner. We have ensured that all the challenges have been contained," commissioner Juliana Cherera said during a hastily arranged press briefing at Serena Hotel.

"But some things need to be put out there as you can see the four of us are here and not at Bomas where the results are going to be announced because of the opaque nature of how this phase has been handled," Cherera said.

She was accompanied by fellow commissioners Francis Wanderi, Irene Masit and Justus Nyangaya.

Their pronouncements came moments after Raila's Azimio la Umoja campaign team said they would not accept results they could not verify.

Raila's Chief agent Saitabao Ole Kanchory claimed that the IEBC system had been compromised.

"We have intelligence reports that their system was penetrated and hacked and that some IEBC officials committed electoral offences and some of them ought to have been arrested," he said.

Cherera said despite the announcement, the aggrieved parties have room to go to the court to challenge the results.

She asked Kenyans to remain calm despite the development.

"We urge Kenyans to be peaceful because the rule of law is going to prevail. We will give details of this opaque nature very soon," she said.
