The Ministry of Agriculture has denied reports that it has suspended the Sh100 Unga subsidy.

According to the Principal Secretary state department for Crops Development and Agricultural Research, Francis Owino, the program is still on.

Owino who spoke to the Star said the ministry is still monitoring the situation.

However, an internal memo date August 13, seen by the Star said that the Treasury was slow in releasing funds to implement the program, thus the decision to suspend it.

"Due to inadequate exchequer releases from the National Treasury, it has been decided that, the Maize Flour Subsidy program be suspended with immediate effect," the memo reads.

"The purpose of this memo therefore, is to direct that you suspend the above program immediately and prepare a comprehensive closure report for my review as soon as practical."

This comes barely four weeks after the government introduced the subsidy to cushion Kenyans against the rising cost of maize flour.
