Peter Ochieng Orero, former Dagoretti High School principal with a passion for sports, on Thursday was declared Kibra MP-elect.

Orero received his certificate as residents celebrated, especially those from Dagoretti, his last stop before entering politics.

But as a teacher, deputy principal and principal, Orero nurtured sports talents, some of Kenya's top footballers.

"I appreciate the people of Kenya and ODM party leader Raila Odinga for having faith in me and giving me the ticket to represent the people to Kibra," he said.

"I was the principal here in a school in Kibra but now I am the MP-elect. It has made me who I am."

Mwalimu Orero defeated UDA candidate McDonald Mariga and incumbent Bernard Imran Okoth, an independent.

For over three decades, Orero ensured that in every school he worked, the team he focused on excelled.

Over the years, he has been credited with the rise of some of the country’s top talents.

Orero’s journey into secondary school sports began at Kamukunji Secondary in 1990. He has since tutored at Langata High, Upper Hill and his current station, Dagoretti High.

In football, Orero has helped develop numerous internationals, including UEFA Champions League winner MacDonald Mariga; his USA-based brother brother Victor Wanyama; China-based Michael Olunga and the Harambee Stars all-time goal scorer Dennis Oliech.

Canada-based Ray Odhiambo is another of the top Kamukunji talents during Orero’s time there.

He has guided some of Kenya's top players, including Francis Odhiambo, George Odhiambo and Jamal Mohammed, whom Orero describes as one of the best midfielders in Kenya.

Others are Andrew Oyombe, Oliech’s brother, who captained the team at the 2000 national championships; Geoffrey Kokoyo, who captained Ulinzi for 10 years; and Francis Ocholla, who his name at the national giants. Gor Mahia.

Orero served as the chairman of the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA).

He taught at schools known to produce some of the greatest sports figures, including Kamukunji Boys, Lang'ata High and Upper Hill.

Orero moved to Upper Hill school as deputy principal in 2002 and immediately guided the school to the Nairobi finals.

He was named coach of the KSSSA U-20 team to Kampala, Uganda, for the Coca-Cola-sponsored regional tournament.

He also guided the basketball team to their first Nairobi final in 2004, when they fell to St Austin’s Academy.

His next stop was Langata High in 2005. There he took netball to the national finals in 2006, 2007 and 2008. They also did well in basketball, going to a number of national finals, but they never won.

Orero returned to Upper Hill in 2007, this time as a principal, and immediately engaged another gear.

While at Upper Hill, through his efforts, the school was made a national talent centre for football, while basketball also benefited from a UNICEF-sponsored project. Orero coordinated all the activities and finances.

Besides being involved in school sports where he is also the KSSSA Nairobi chairman, Orero served as an assistant to long-serving secretary general David Ngugi.

In 1999 when Orero was at Kamukunji and Ngugi at Oshwal, they noted Nairobi teams were doing badly in sports nationally.

They teamed up with Moses Mbuthia to ensure performance improved. And it did.

His interest in netball also saw him listed as a national team coach. He was involved with the TSC football team for 10 years both as coach and player.

Before moving to KBF as the treasurer, he was the secretary of the Nairobi Basketball Association (NBA).
