Former Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba has recaptured the seat he lost in 2017.

Bedzimba of ODM garnered 34,747 votes.

The former GSU officer was announced the winner by Kisauni returning officer Ibrahim Wario.

His closest rival, Mbarak Hamid of UDA, polled 12,336 votes.

Beatrice Gambo, who ditched ODM to run as an independent candidate after Bedzimba was issued with a direct ticket, came in a distant third with 6,533 votes.

The Kisauni parliamentary seat had attracted eight candidates.

Dume Ngala of Wiper garnered 1,683 votes, Juma Willis Odhiambo (independent) got 398 and Mwaluma Haginson Mwandawiro (independent) got 514.

Others are Ojwan'g David Aundho (independent) with 546 and Zuma Henry Chiguba of Tujibebe Wakenya party got 382 votes.

Bedzimba lost the seat to Ali Menza Mbogo of Wiper in the 2017 general election.

He challenged the win in court but his petition was thrown out.

Bedzimba, a close ally of Governor Hassan Joho, was appointed political adviser in the office of the governor. He held the position until he decided to run for Kisauni MP again.

Mbogo did not defend his seat as he was running for the Mombasa governor's seat on the Wiper party ticket before he was replaced by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

It was decided that he would deputise Sonko in the race, but the Supreme Court and IEBC blocked them from vying.

In 2013, Bedzimba took over from Joho, who went on to become the first Mombasa governor.

In the build-up to this year's election, Bedzimba supported businessman Suleiman Shahbal, who was seeking the ODM party ticket to run for Mombasa governor.

However, after ODM leader Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta intervened to convince Shahbal to step down in favour of Nassir, Bedzimba transferred his loyalty to Nassir.
