But this changed immediately after Azimio was formed and Uhuru became its patron.
More significantly, the tide turned against him after Raila Odinga appointed Martha Karua as his running mate.
Ruto himself goofed by appointing Rigathi Gachagua. He thought Uhuru would immediately campaign for Raila but that did not happen as Martha was doing it very well.
After April, Ruto's ratings went down drastically, he started attacking civil servants. From last month, more specifically from June 30, Azimio became more orderly, so Kwanza started attacking the President.
This came out clearly during the Gachagua-Karua debate in which we asked whether he was debating Karua or the President.
When Raila decided not to debate, having anticipated the DP would debate Kenyatta, the best-case scenario played out for him. For Ruto, it was the worst-case scenario as he lost the opportunity to attack Raila and government officials.
So, what he was unable to say at the debate is what he is now saying publicly in small doses.
His theory now is that Harambee House is working with chiefs. But who do chiefs work with? Should we then say chiefs can deal with every security issue but not those election-related? They deal with security daily and enforced Covid-19 protocols. They restore law and order in the villages. So, why claim chiefs have nothing to do with the security of elections?
Ruto is panicking. When he was not panicking, he was talking about the 'deep state' and how he will deal with it. Now he has changed, saying the 'deep state' will manipulate the elections. The statistics are out there. How can Odinga steal an election when he is winning?
Ruto wants to show he did not lose so by the time he starts preparing for 2027, he will say that his election was stolen. He is looking forward to 2027 and trying to consolidate his base. He is holding his team together to fight another day as this is a lost cause.
