The DPP has directed the police IG Hillary Mutyambai to investigate the authenticity of an audio recording where Suna East MP Junet Mohamed is heard allegedly setting up a meeting with IEBC officials.

Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji says if found to be authentic, the conversation amounts to an election offence.

"The remarks captured in the voice recording and the alleged subsequent meeting may be contrary to section 20(2) of the Elections Offences Act, 2016 and section 15 of the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crimes Act, 2018," Haji said in a letter to Mutyambai.

In the alleged phone conversation between Junet and an IEBC official, the MP is heard setting up a meeting with an IEBC commissioners, chairman Wafula Chebukati and others.

"Now, there is a high level meeting you were asking me about...I want to organise it tomorrow at 6:00 number 6 in the evening. We will discuss this matter and we have to come up with a solution," Junet is quoted as saying.

"There is a problem there...we need to sort it out," he adds.

The directive follows a similar one where the DPP wants the Inspector General to establish the authenticity of a video where DP William Ruto is heard profiling some communities in Uasin Gishu county.

Junet and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho published the video on Tuesday.

The clip was manipulated to show that the DP was profiling certain ethnic communities residing in Rift Valley and declaring shame on them.

"The investigation file should be submitted to the office within seven days of the date hereof," Haji to the IG.
