United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged Kenyans to ensure they have a peaceful and transparent election process.

Blinken pointed out that transparency and peace are critical in delivering a secure future for the citizens.

"We urge a peaceful and transparent democratic process, which is critical to delivering a more prosperous and secure future for all Kenyans," he tweeted on Wednesday.

The 71st Secretary of State said the August 9 process is an opportunity for Kenyans to showcase their democracy to the world as they make their voices heard.

His message comes shortly after the US Embassy in Nairobi defended its decision in issuing a movement restriction on the American personnel in Kisumu.

"The United States has no information to suggest the security situation in Kisumu, or in any other parts of Kenya, have been adversely affected by election preparations," Embassy spokesperson said in a statement.

Blinken is the second diplomat to wish Kenyans a peaceful period after the former Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete.

"So much appreciation to Kenyans for being calm up to this point where the campaigns are at a climax," Kikwete said, adding that the same should be observed after elections.

On August 9, Kenyans are expected to line up and vote for their preferred candidates from the position of MCA to the presidency.

Presidential candidates include Azimio's Raila Odinga, his closest rival DP William Ruto of Kenya Kwanza, Roots' leader George Wajackoyah and Agano party's David Mwaure.
