Azimio presidential running mate Martha Karua has hit out at Deputy President William Ruto after he broke into tears at a prayer service in Karen, Nairobi, on Tuesday.

Karua, while speaking at a campaign rally in Bukhungu Stadium on Wednesday,  said people should stop pretending to be Christians.

"Ukiristo sio machozi. Ukiristo ni tabia (Christianity is not about tears. Christianity is about the character)," she said in remarks aimed at DP Ruto.

"You should know, Jesus Christ has no deputy on Earth. Wewe wacha kujifanya deputy wa Jesus Christ (Stop pretending to be Jesus Christ's deputy)."

She added: "Niwaeleze kwa Bible, Yesu alisema sio kila mtu anaitana Yesu, Yesu ataingia kwa ufalme wa mbinguni (Let me explain to you in the Bible, Jesus said it is not everyone who calls Jesus, Jesus will get into the kingdom of heaven)".

Karua pointed out that the proof of Christianity is not a name or attending church services.

The NARC Kenya leader said if one is claiming to be a Christian, he or she should follow what the Bible teaches.

"Penda watu. Wacha kiburi. Wacha vitisho. Kuwa mtu wa kunyenyekea vile kristo alikua ananyenyekea (Love others. Stop arrogance. Stop threats. Be a humble person as Christ was)."

Karua noted that she has been in politics for a long period of time adding that she is an ardent Christian.

She asked those doubting her faith to wait for the judgement day.

At the same time, she defended her boss Raila Odinga saying he is an Anglican, a Christian.

"Leave us alone and focus on your politics. Let Kenyans be. Stop choking our nation with corruption. Let my people go!" Karua said.

In a viral clip on Tuesday, Ruto is seen getting into a prayerful mood as tears flow freely down his cheeks.

At one point, the DP is seen putting his hands on his face as he blinks with watery eyes, which could indicate he was fighting back tears.
