Rev Joseph Ntombura will serve as the Presiding Bishop for the Methodist Church in Kenya for another two years.

Speaking to the press at the Methodist resort conference centre, Ntombura said the annual conference held on August 3 allowed for his extension. There were 179 votes in his favour against one.

Also elected are three more Bishops Rev Julius Kinyua (New Mt. Kenya) Rev Genatone Funana (Singuaya in Coast) and Rev David Ntogonya (Uganda). Ntombura has been the presiding Bishop of the church since 2013.

It was expected he would retire at the end of the year.

He together with the trustee registered methodist church had filed a case in court on Monday seeking orders against other leaders in the church from interrupting the 57 annual conferences.

They were apprehensive that some of the Bishops may interrupt the meeting owing to past wrangles.

But Lawyer Danstan Omari has since filed an affidavit seeking to withdraw the matter now that elections were conducted peacefully and new leadership installed.

The matter is to be mentioned on September 5 as the case is withdrawn in the presence of the other parties.

"Goons had been hired to come and distract the conference and the elections. But today we express our gratitude to all government agencies that were deployed to come and ensure there was no breach of peace," said Omari
