Kenya Kwanza presidential candidate William Ruto has taken a swipe at the government for failing to keep its word on the delivery of subsidized maize flours in supermarkets.
In a statement, the DP weighed in on the shortage of maize flour in shops and supermarkets blaming state capture for the tragedy.
In an apparent reference to President Uhuru and his Handshake partner Raila Odinga, the DP asked Kenyans to vote for him to have the crisis solved.
"There is no unga in any shop/supermarket, leave alone the one they promised to retail at Sh100. Can you trust them? End State capture on August 9," he tweeted.
On July 20, Uhuru announced that unga was going to retail at Sh100, until otherwise directed, in a bid to cushion the cost of living.
Two weeks after, the product has been lacking in various outlets across the country.
Speaking on Saturday in Kisumu, the State Department for Crops Development and Agriculture PS Francis Owino however claimed that traders were hoarding maize flour.
He assured Kenyans that the shortage is artificial, and warned that any trader caught hoarding will be dealt with.
"This flour is meant for consumption, not storage. We have enough stocks therefore just buy what is enough for you."
Owino said the processing of invoices for the subsidized unga is still ongoing after having started on July 26.
He noted that out of the Sh4 billion released to facilitate the program, Sh256 million had already been paid.
"Payments of all invoices received are initiated immediately and payments are done within 24 hours," he said.
