President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on Kenyans to vote for the Raila Odinga -Martha Karua presidency come next week, August 2022.
Comparing the Azimio presidency to a train, Uhuru said Kenya will be safe with Raila as the driver and Karua as the conductor.
“Mtachagua ile gari ya moshi yenye ikona ndugu yangu Raila kama dereva na mama Martha kama conductor. (Will you choose the train which is packed with driver and conductor ?) He posed.
Speaking while in Kisumu on Monday, Uhuru once again stated that he chose Martha Karua to be Raila’s running mate while drumming up support for her.
The head of state explained that Raila went to him and asked him about the running mate factor and Uhuru suggested Karua .
“Huyu conductor ni mama ambaye hacheki, mama wa haki, and she will not allow thieves to dominate but will champion kazi iwe ya wannanchi si ya kibinafsi. In other names she is called Iron lady..Martha ,..Martha Wanagari…Martha Wangari Karua..Will you choose the train which is packed with driver and conductor so that Kenya gets development, Justice, unity and respect? ‘ Uhuru posed.
In June 2022, Uhuru had revealed that Raila had asked him about the running choice and that himself he proposed Matha Karua.
He explained that despite him and Karua not being friends, she had Kenya’s best interests at heart and her non-corruption tolerance was best for the country.
"I settled on Martha Karua not because she is my friend. In fact it is in the public that Martha and I hardly agreed on anything there before. She even ran against me in 2012. But I settled on her because I have full confidence that our community is safe in her hands,”Uhuru said.
It is better I follow someone who is just, truthful and led by the desire to serve people but not herself,” he added..
The Head of State said he was in awe of Karua's personality despite their past ideological differences.
Uhuru cited Karua's unwavering stance regarding public service, noting that she is a reputable leader who has earned his respect.
On June 1 during Madaraka day celebrations, Uhuru tactically endorsed Raila Odinga and as his preferred successor and Karua as the Azimio principle assistant.
He said Kenyans have a historic opportunity to elect the first woman as Deputy President.
“In August this year, if it is the wish of the electorate, we will have a chance of a woman shattering the glass ceiling by assuming the second-highest office in our republic,” Uhuru added.
