The government has been challenged to declare a three-day holiday to allow Kenyans to travel upcountry and vote on August 9.

Former nominated senator Paul Njoroge said some voters are working away from where they registered and will need two days off their official duties to travel to and from upcountry.

"On 8th those who stay far will need to travel and on 9th the voting day to allow Kenyans to vote," Njoroge said.

"And on the 10th, those who traveled upcountry will need to travel back before resuming official duty on 11th," he added.

The former legislator said the government should treat the request with seriousness because failure to do so will prevent many Kenyans from voting.

"This may lead to undesired election results and because we need free and fair elections, I hope the government will declared those three days as holidays," Njoroge said.

The August 9 general election is six days away.

Already, the government has closed all public schools to allow prior preparations for the conduct of the polls.

Over 250 schools will be used as polling and tallying centres on polling day.

Learners were released on Tuesday and are expected to report back on August 11, 2022 to complete their second term.
