Suspect in court over Sh500k sugar and flour fraud

A city man accused of fraudulently obtaining maize and wheat flour and sugar totaling to Sh501,700 from a businessman was on Friday arraigned in a Kibera court.

Kembero was arraigned before chief magistrate Ann Mwangi when the matter came up for hearing.

According to the charge sheet, the accused person is said to have committed the offence on September 26 and 28, 2020 in Riruta area, Dagoreti subcounty within Nairobi.

The accused allegedly defrauded businessman Diris Abdi Ahmed of the goods that constituted 150 bales of wheat flour, 25 bales of maize flour and 14 packets of Kabras Sugar by falsely pretending that he was in a position to pay for them, a fact he knew was false.

He was also charged with a second count count of assaulting Lay Kijana Saluku, occasioning him bodily harm.

Kombero denied the charges and he remain innocent until proven guilty by the court.

Police constable Bungei from Dagoreti testified in court how the accused person was arrested after a report of assault was filed by the complainant.

He is currently out on bond.

The officer said the complainant in the case of assault reported that the accused person assaulted him after a disagreement erupted over payment for the goods.

The accused, through his lawyer, questioned the officer after he alleged that the complainant in the assault case developed a headache and was treated in hospital

The defence wanted to know if the officer was a medical officer, and he denied being the same.

The officer also testified in the case on how the goods were stolen.

The magistrate directed that the matter proceeds early next month for ruling on whether the accused person has a case to answer or not.
