DP William Ruto's head of communications Hussein Mohammed now claims their presidential running mate Rigathi Gachagua got less time during the debate with Azimio counterpart Martha Karua on Tuesday.

Speaking during a press briefing on Thursday, Mohammed appealed to the media for equal allocation of time.

"Rigathi Gachagua got 32 minutes during the debate, Martha Karua got 39 and some seconds. We need fairness."

The debate, however, had an equal time for each candidate.

The candidates were given a specific and equal time within which they were to answer questions.

From the debate, the Star observed that some candidates exploited their minutes by answering questions in a detailed manner while some gave brief answers throwing away their allocated minutes.

Mohammed said that, despite all, Gachagua performed well, acknowledging that he was well received.

He also complained that the allocation of time was devoted to discussing trivial matters like personal and political relationships.

"At the expense of the issues that Kenyans demand and deserve to know from the campaigns. We regret to observe that a crucial opportunity was therefore laid to utter waste," the former journalist said.

Mohammed further said the team hoped that the coming presidential debates will be an improvement from the past.

On Tuesday, Gachagua and Azimio's Karua had a debate session at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

Among the cards played then were family, Karua's exit from the late President Mwai Kibaki's government, which she defended.

"I resigned on principle…Whatever dynamics there might be, later on, I worked with Raila, we were friends of CORD and worked together in 2017," she said.

They also discussed issues on President Uhuru and the first family, and corruption.

Both leaders vowed to fight corruption if their camps are elected on August 9.
