Agano Party presidential running mate Ruth Mutua on Tuesday weighed in on Roots' Party manifesto which proposes the hanging of corrupt leaders.

Mutua is the running mate of presidential candidate Wahiga Mwaure.

She said, in her opinion, people deserve to live and be corrected.

"I don't think we need to hang people, they deserve to live and be corrected. I don't think even kunyonga (hang) is in the constitution."

She spoke during a deputy presidential debate at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa(CUEA).

Roots party presidential candidate George Wajackoyah has pledged to hang the corrupt if he wins the presidency.

Mutua clarified that the Kenyan law did not allow hanging as a punishment for graft crimes, adding the party has a covenant with the law and Kenyans.

The last hanging in Kenya was in 1987.

"The law clearly stipulates, that we are not allowed to hang. So what business do we have, hanging convicts?" she asked.

She added that there is a law that already deals with corrupt officials.

Mutua further said she did not agree with Roots' plan to suspend part of the law.

Answering the Roots' presidential running mate Justina Wamae on how her administration will deal with corruption, Mutua said they will jail all graft leaders, as the law points out.

"Why would we want to hang people? You have a sister, a brother who probably needs to be corrected. So why to hang?" she asked.
