Police have gunned down four suspected members of the Nyuki gang in Barut, Nakuru West.

Nakuru police commander Peter Mwanzo said the four were gunned down on Friday after they defied orders to surrender and tried to attack police with machetes and arrows.

This comes days after two people were beheaded in the area by people believed to be from the notorious Confirm gang.

Mwanzo said police have restored order in Nakuru and its surroundings forcing the gangs to relocate to the villages where they have started to cause mayhem.

“Our officers were on patrol in Barut, where they spotted some young men who were possibly waylaying people on the roadside. The men tried to attack the uninformed officers,” Mwanzo said.

“The police fired in the air but the men tried attacking the officers, while they (gang) raised an alarm calling for reinforcement from other gang members.”

Mwanzo said the other gang members came with bows and arrows and started shooting at the police prompting them to respond with fire.

Those injured escaped into the neighbouring maize plantation.

Police recovered a machete, 30 arrows, knife phones and sim cards which are believed to be used by the gangs to steal, kill or maim the residents.

The police uprooted bhang which is believed to have been planted by the same gang (Nyuki) a branch of the Confirm gang.

Mwanzo has warned that criminal gangs in Nakuru will not be tolerated and they should surrender and change their ways.

He has urged residents and hospitals to cooperate with the police and give any information on anyone seeking medical attention from gunshot wounds.
