Mwai Kibaki's only surving sister dies

Waitherero was the only surviving sibling after the death of Kibaki.

Late former President Mwai Kibaki's only surviving sister Esther Waitherero has died.

Waitherero died at her home in Gatuyaini in Othaya on  July 13 night after a short illness.

Waitherero was the only surviving sibling after the death of Kibaki and she played a major role in raising him.

After the demise of former president Kibaki in April, Waitherero expressed sadness and said the death had deeply affected her.

Kibaki served as the third president of the Republic of Kenya from 2002 to 2013.

He died in April 2022 and was buried at his home in Othaya. 

Kibaki is survived by four children Judy Wanjiku, Jimmy Kibaki, David Kagi and Tony Githinji.

He left a legacy of strong growth in the regional economic powerhouse, launching major infrastructure projects and boosting the struggling health and education sectors.
