The body of a man was on Thursday discovered at an abandoned house in Athi River, Machakos county.
The body was burnt beyond recognition.
Athi River assistant chief Martin Ngomo said the body was discovered by passers by early Thursday.
"We received a phone call at around 10 am that there was a young man who got burnt. He got burnt beyond recognition in Athi River township location within Athi River subcounty," Ngomo told the Star at the scene on Thursday.
The administrator said the deceased was of unstable mental health.
The cause of fire wasn't immediately established but it is suspected that a mattress on which he was sleeping on caught fire while he was asleep leading to his death.
The house, suspected to be his dwelling place at Embakasi estate neither does not have a roof or doors.
Ngomo said the man was well known to residents with by the nickname Proffessor.
Police from Athi River police station moved the body to Machakos Level 5 Hospital mortuary.
DCI officers from the station have launched investigations into the incident.
