MTN Uganda names Safaricom's Sylvia Mulinge new CEO

Mulinge will replace Wim Vanhelleputte at the firm.

MTN Uganda has named Sylvia Mulinge new CEO effective October 1, 2022.

Mulinge will replace Wim Vanhelleputte at the firm.

Chairman of the Board of Directors Charles Mbire said In this role, she is responsible for driving the consumer telecoms business.

She will also manage the overall brand, and leading the transformation of the brand to become a digital lifestyle enabler of consumers’ lives.

“I would like to welcome Sylvia Mulinge to MTN Uganda. I believe that her experience will be beneficial to MTN, particularly given her alignment to our strategic intent of leading digital solutions for Africa’s progress," he said.

"The Board is confident that Ms. Mulinge will continue the work of growing the Company as a leading provider of telecommunications and digital solutions.” 

In the interim, the current Chief Financial Officer, Andrew Bugembe, has been appointed as Acting Chief Executive Officer effective August 1, 2022, until September 30, 2022.

Mulinge joined Safaricom in 2007 and has occupied various senior roles over the years, including Head of Retail, Head of Sales, and Director of Consumer Business.

She is a graduate of the University of Nairobi, Kenya, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree (first-class honours).

She is still the Safaricom’s Chief Consumer Business Officer. Her last working day is September 30th.

Sylvia joined Safaricom in 2006 and has held various senior roles.

This includes general manager enterprise Unit and Director consumer Business Unit, before assuming the role of Chief Customer Officer in 2018.

CEO Peter Ndegwa said she has been instrumental in setting up two key business in Safaricom, Enterprise and Fixed Data.

"A champion of digital transformation, Sylvia is a purpose led and impact driven business leader," he said.
